On the morning of September 13, members of CCR gathered at the lake for the annual Head of Wequaquet Lake regatta—lovingly known as the HOWL. Following a tremendous sunrise, the weather was picture-perfect for the event. Warm temps, flat water, nothing but sunny skies.
The rowers were ready for some friendly competition, with the focus on “friendly,” we are a competitive bunch, after all. After a review of the format and course, teams went out in coxed fours, quads, singles and doubles to race side-by-side down the course laid out from Marilyn’s Cove along the beach to the finish line past the swim area.
Coach Alex was ready at the start line in the launch to send the teams on their way, and Tim was out in his pontoon boat to monitor the finish line. The teams were a mixture of seasoned and newer rowers; it was fun to have the shared experience of pulling together in hopes of a strong showing.
Following the racing, everyone gathered together for the “awards ceremony”—Janet provided pumpkins to the winners! A veritable feast of refreshments was organized by Patty Hanley, many members brought delicious treats! A big thank you to Beth and Muffin for encouraging members to sign up to compete and assembling the lineups for each race.
The goal for 2026 will be to encourage more of our newbies to join us! CCR is fortunate to have such a fun group that enjoys rowing together in such a beautiful location.
